I’ve had the privilege of watching Mike Meyer turn a simple yet powerful idea into something extraordinary. What started as a way to help young music students has grown into Band of Angels, a nonprofit that’s changing lives through the power of music.
Band of Angels has a partnership between FOX4 and Meyer Music, dedicated to collecting instruments and funding the purchase of musical instruments for children who otherwise wouldn’t have access to music education. Many families simply can’t afford an instrument, and Band of Angels is helping ensure that every child who wants to study music has the opportunity to do so.
One of the things I admire most about Band of Angels is how Mike tapped into the resources of our Overland Park South Rotary Club—a lawyer to file for 501(c)(3) status, a marketing expert to craft strategy, and even Fox 4 to help share the message. What began as a local music store’s initiative has flourished into an organization that has now donated over 3,150 instruments to students and schools and continues to grow each year.
While I was never a music kid myself, I’ve enjoyed watching the joy music brings to children as they excel and learn to play—without the pressures that often come with affordability. Music can open doors that might otherwise remain closed, and I’ve seen firsthand how Band of Angels helps remove financial barriers so kids can focus on developing their talent and passion.
A Life-Changing Gift: Destiny White-Dixon’s Story
One of the most inspiring examples of Band of Angels’ impact is the story of Destiny White-Dixon. In sixth grade, Destiny’s grandfather encouraged her to play the trumpet. A donated trumpet from Band of Angels made that possible, and from that moment on, her life was forever changed.
Because of that single instrument, Destiny was able to develop her musical skills, attend music and leadership camps, and ultimately receive full scholarship offers to multiple colleges in 2018. Her mother, who couldn’t afford to buy an instrument on her own, was deeply moved by the generosity of Band of Angels and its supporters.
Destiny’s journey didn’t end with college.
She returned to Band of Angels and now serves as their Student Program Coordinator, giving back to the organization that helped shape her future. And in an incredible full-circle moment, Destiny recently joined Rotary Club, the very place where the idea for Band of Angels was born. Her story is proof that access to music education can truly transform lives and inspire future generations to give back.
Art That Blows – A Night of Music, Art, and Giving
One of the ways Band of Angels raises funds is through its incredible events, including the Heartstrings Gala and my personal favorite, Art That Blows. This unique event transforms nonfunctional musical instruments into one-of-a-kind art pieces, which are then auctioned off to support young musicians in need.
I first got involved as a Rock Star ambassador, helping bring people together, raise money, and, of course, dressing up for the Rock Star photoshoot. It was a fun way to support a serious cause, and each year, the event continues to grow and evolve.
Every July at The Abbott KC, Art That Blows brings together music lovers, artists, and philanthropists for an unforgettable night of creativity and community. Each year, a different band takes the stage, and I was especially excited when Kansas State University came to perform.
Not only do the proceeds from Art That Blows and other Band of Angels events provide free instruments to students, but they also help fund scholarships for kids to attend summer band camp. These camps give young musicians the opportunity to refine their skills, grow their confidence, and immerse themselves in the joy of playing music with others.
Keeping the Rock Star Tradition Alive
One of the ways I stay engaged with Art That Blows is by nominating a new Rock Star ambassador each year. In 2025, I’m thrilled that our COO, Tamara Stelting, and my best friend, Derrick Miller, will be stepping into the spotlight. Check out their Rock Star photos! The event keeps getting better, and I love seeing new people bring their energy and enthusiasm to the cause.
How You Can Help
Band of Angels continues to expand its reach, providing instruments to students and sending young musicians to band camps and other educational opportunities.
There are several ways to contribute:
- Donate an instrument – Band of Angels accepts instruments in good condition at any of the three Meyer Music locations
- Make a tax-deductible monetary donation – Contributions help fund scholarships and instrument repairs.
- Attend Art That Blows – Enjoy an evening of music, art, and philanthropy while supporting the cause.
- Spread the word – Share Band of Angels’ mission so more people can get involved.
For those interested in donating instruments, Band of Angels is especially in need of flutes, clarinets, trumpets, trombones, French horns, saxophones, xylophones, violins, cellos, basses, oboes, marimbas, and tubas.
This organization and its events are more than just a fundraiser—they’re a movement. Whether you donate, attend, or help spread the word, you’re helping make music education accessible to kids who need it most. I hope you’ll join us in making a lasting impact for young musicians in Kansas City.
